De tant en tant, la gent em pregunta: com és que defenses els catalans amb tant de fervor?
Amics, la meva resposta és senzilla: els catalans són letons.
Potser no en sentit literal -el seu terrifori acaba en una mar una pèl diferent de la nostra-, però en sentit filosòfic. En termes de valors europeus en el sentit més profund i ampli, sí, els catalans són letons! Els catalans també són finesos, estonians, lituans, noruecs: una nació europea amb autoestima, que s'ha guanyat el dret a l'autodeterminació. Ni més ni menys que letons, finesos, estonians i altres. El fet de viure en una Unió Europea democràtica en el segle XXI no és, en cap sentit, un motiu per negar-los aquell dret. Al contrari: en principi, hem de respectar els drets fonamentals de les nacions. Aquesta és la base constitucional i fonamental de la nostra pròpia República de Letònia, el nostre fonament jurídic fonamental. Si comencem a dubtar de la validesa d'aquest, posem en dubte la validesa del nostre dret a l'autodeterminació.
I el més important: si perdones la persecució de qualsevol nació europea, llavors és inevitable que més tard o més d'hora altres nacions siguin perseguides a Europa.
Podria arribar un dia en què la llista de nacions perseguides inclogués, una vegada més, la nostra pròpia nació: la letonsa. Com va passar en la nostra històrica història tristament recent. Avui els catalans són perseguits a la UE simplement perquè són catalans. No hem de fer-ne la vista grossa, perquè llavors la nostra ceguesa cínica obrirà la porta a la perdició, tal com ha succeït abans en la història d'Europa, quan els destins de les nacions petites es negociaven en interès dels poders imperials, per al seu arrogant engrandiment. Mai no acceptaré tal cosa, mai no tornaré a callar, i mai no em rendiré. Defensant els catalans, defenso també els letons i totes les altres nacions europees. He experimentat el malson totalitari de l'URSS i, per tant, em mantindré ferm pels principis fonamentals de la democràcia, els seus valors i els drets humans.
P.D. He dit als catalans que podrien convertir-se en la quarta república bàltica, no importa que estiguin en un altre mar. Els agrada la idea. Què diries si Catalunya es convertís en la quarta república bàltica?

From time to time people ask me – why do you defend the Catalonians so fiercely? Friends, my answer is simple – Catalonians are Latvians.
Perhaps not in the literal sense – their land borders on a somewhat different sea, but in a philosophical sense. In terms of European values in the deepest and widest sense – yes, Catalonians are Latvians! Catalonians are also Finns, Estonians, Lithuanians, Norwegians – a self-respecting European nation which has earned the right to self-determination. Neither more nor less than Latvians, Finns, Estonians and others. The fact that we live in a democratic European Union in the 21st century is in no sense a reason for denying them that right. On the contrary – we must in principle respect the fundamental rights of nations. This is the basic constitutional and foundation
of our own Latvian Republic, our rock-bottom legal underpinning. If we start to doubt the validity of it, then we call into question the validity of our own right to self-determination.
And the most important thing – if we condone the persecution of any nation in Europe, then it is inevitable that eventually other nations will be persecuted in Europe. There may come a day when the list of persecuted nations will include, once again, our own nation – the Latvians. As happened in our comparatively recent tragic history. Today the Catalonians are persecuted in the EU simply because they are Catalonians. We must no turn a blind eye to it, for then our cynical blindness will open the door to perdition, as it has happened before in the history of Europe, when the fates of small nations were traded for the interests of imperial powers, for arrogant, unfeeling aggrandizement. I will never accept such a thing, I will never be silent, and I will never give up. Defending the Catalans, I defend also the Latvians and all other European nations. I have experienced the totalitarian nightmare of the USSR, and therefore I will stand firm for the core principles of democracy, its values and human rights.
P.S. I have said to the Catalans that they could become the fourth Baltic
