European Commission and Catalonia

15 minutes of bombardment of the European Commission spokesman by the press. Thank you, all of you. Thank you.

The Spanish constitution is being interpreted in an utterly distorted way by the Spanish government to suit their long-standing centralizing and uniformising project.

Nowhere in the Constitution does it say a referendum is unconstitutional.

The Spanish government is not applying Constitutional court rulings that favour Catalonia.

It is not respecting its international treaty commitments as it is constitutionally obliged to do, thereby breaching the Constitution.

Following the Constitutional Court ruling in 2010 against its Statute of Autonomy, the legal framework of Catalonia in unconstitutional, because it has not been voted in a referendum by the Catalan people as it is constitutionally obliged to do.

This has lasted seven years, during which time the Catalans have been subjected to an onslaught of court cases affecting the social welfare of its citizens, by the Spanish government.

So the European Commission's references to respect for the Spanish Constitution, when the Spanish government is the first not to respect it, is laughable, I'm sorry to say.

THE PROBLEM IS POLITICAL. IT CANNOT BE RESOLVED BY PUTTING HALF OUR LEADERS IN PRISON, ESPECIALLY IN A SYSTEM WHERE EVERYONE AGREES THAT THE SEPARATION OF POWERS IS A CHIMERA, AND IN A HOSTILE CLIMATE ACROSS SPAIN, WHIPPED UP OVER THE YEARS AGAINST THE CATALANS, FOR PURELY ELECTORAL GAINS.
