A false controversy has arisen on account of the convenience or otherwise of flags being flown at the demonstration (despite vast demonstrations promoted by the PP against ETA with thousands of Spanish flags). Barcelona Mayoress Ada Colau reminded people (on the same day as the demonstration) that the demonstration was about people, not flags: http://elmon.cat/noticia/222928/colau-recorda-que-la-manifestacio-es-de-la-gent-i-no-de-banderes

Spain's dirty war and the 17A terrorist attacks - INDEX
This set of entries is aimed to outline the manipulations, insidious hints, and outright lies aimed at the Catalan government, and particularly the Catalan police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra (or simply "Mossos"), in a clear but desperate attempt to whip up public opinion against them in the run-up to the 1 October independence referendum, following the August 19 terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils.
It is worth remembering that the Spanish government has not only refused to authorize the referendum (despite its commitment to international treaties on the issue) but threatens to confiscate the property of Catalan political leaders and their officials (to date, to the tune of over €5 million), bar them from office, dismiss them from their jobs, and even imprison them on grounds of sedition and contempt of court.

Bin Laden was the man who invented the undetectable communication system known as "dead letterbox". But the espionage services have adopted it as a contact tool with their undercover informants, and that method of transmission - which can not be intercepted because nothing is actually sent - is the one used by Spain's National Intelligence Centre (CNI) to communicate with its most secret confidant: the imam of Ripoll, Abdelbaki is Satty, leader of the terrorists who committed the massacre of Las Ramblas in Barcelona two years ago.

The leader of the Jihadi terrorist group which on August 17th, 2017 attacked Barcelona's Rambla, Abdelbaki Es Satty, was an informer for the Spanish secret service, the CNI, right up until the attacks in which 15 people were murdered.
According to exclusive information published by the Spanish digital newspaper Público.es, Spain's CNI knew that a terrorist group based in the Catalan town of Ripoll was preparing an attack. The newspaper has had access to information that confirms this relationship between the Spanish intelligence agency and the attack mastermind, as well as showing that the CNI spies were monitoring the group's movements to and from the location of their bomb factory.
The intelligence agency communicated with Satty, the imam of Ripoll, through a hard-to-detect communication system known as "dead mail drops", which consists of writing draft emails without sending them. The two people who want to communicate enter the same mailbox and add to their drafts, but since they never hit 'send', the data does not circulate on the internet. As Público.es notes, this system was invented by Bin Laden.
The newspaper has obtained screenshots from the gmail account that was used for communications between the imam and the CNI: adamperez27177@gmail.com. The new revelations are the result of a year of investigation during which the newspaper has opened up intelligence sources, gathered confidential documents and extracted data from the investigations into the attacks.
The email address adamperez27177@gmail.com was active until at least two months before the 2017 terror attack. The last message left in the dead mail was from June 19th, 2017, when the bombs used for the attack were already being manufactured. The passwords to access this email address were found in the remains of the group's bomb factory in the town of Alcanar, whose accidental explosion on August 16th, 2017 killed Satty and one other terror group member. As a result of the explosion, the cell moved quickly and the next day improvised the horrific Rambla van attack and a second deadly attack in the town of Cambrils, instead of the high-powered bomb explosion they had been working towards, possibly aimed at Barcelona's Sagrada Família.
Confidential CNI reports that the newspaper has obtained demonstrate that the Ripoll terror cell was monitored by Spanish intelligence. These documents show that the Spanish agency listened to their conversations and followed their movements. The CNI was aware of the trips made by the members of the Jihadi group from Ripoll to Alcanar and knew about the existence of the villa where explosives were being manufactured.
Moreover, Público affirms that the Spanish secret services monitored the terrorists until the very day of the attacks and that Satty's name was erased from CNI files after the attacks.
Spanish authorities monitored terrorist movements
The intelligence reports that the newspaper has obtained on the attacks specify in detail the trips that the members of the terror cell made several months before the August 2017 attacks. The Spanish secret service document list separate journeys by terror group members to Switzerland and Germany, and to France and Belgium, all in December 2016. This second trip was made using the same Audi A-3 car that was later used in the Cambrils attack. The CNI, according to the newspaper, monitored the movements across four countries of the three young men who made the explosives in Alcanar, not only observing their itineraries, but also with advance knowledge of their plans, through listening to their conversations.

Time to demand explanations for the Barcelona Terrorist Attacks
Benjamin Paret
Dec 19, 2017
Four months ago Barcelona suffered a terrorist attack but, unfortunately, part of the story remains in the shadows. Let’s start at the beginning.
Abdelbaki Es Satty was a moroccan imam with previous radical activities that was recruited as an informer by the Spanish Intelligence Agency (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia or CNI). That cooperation prevented Es Satty to be expelled by a judge although he had been involved in drug trafficking.
Es Satty was approached by a Spanish neonazi in order to get weapons to attack a Jewish publishing company and kidnap a Jewish manager in a Catalan bank. The plot was dismantled in 2015.
Being Es Satty a clear risk to Jewish communities, the Israeli intelligence service placed him under a special electronic surveillance.
Es Satty recruited a cell of young people without previous radical activities for a new terrorist plot. They got a a house in Alcanar, a southern Catalan village, and started to buy materials to prepare the explosives. The plan seemed to be a strike against the always crowded Sagrada Familia church, a tourist hot spot, with a truck full of explosives.
Meanwhile, Israeli surveillance, unaware that Es Satty was an informant, concluded that his patterns of activity matched to those of an inminent terrorist attack.
Israeli intelligence service issued warnings of the terrorist preparations to both the Spanish Intelligence Agency and the Spanish Homeland Department. American Intelligence was also informed of the threat.
On July 31st, the Exeintel Group, a private intelligence contractor, also shared critical intelligence of the impending attacks with Spain, the US and other European agencies. It was published by the newspaper Publico later on ( http://www.publico.es/politica/espionaje-eeuu-contacto-asesino-ramblas-telegram-31-julio.html )
After Spanish government’s lack of effective response and fearing an upcoming attack, the Israli Intelligence Service sent operatives to Barcelona to protect key buildings of the local Jewish community....

“Spaniards, You Are Going to Suffer:” The Inside Story of the August 2017 Attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils.
CTC Centinel, January 2018, Volume 11, Issue 1
...This article draws on nine sessions of interviews with police, intelligence, and judicial officials knowledgeable about the case, which were conducted by the authors between September and December 2017 in Barcelona and Madrid. Among the interviewees were officials from Catalonia’s autonomous police, or Mossos d’Esquadra (hereafter Mossos), Cuerpo Nacional de Policía (CNP, National Police), Guardia Civil (GC, Civil Guard), Centro de Inteligencia contra el Terrorismo y el Crimen Organizado (CITCO, Center for Intelligence on Terrorism and Organized Crime), Centro Nacional de Inteligencia (CNI, National Intelligence Center), and the Prosecutor’s Office of Audiencia Nacional (National Court). This account also draws on legally available judicial and law enforcement documents—that is, criminal proceedings that are not subject to a gag order—as well as reliable open sources....
According to Spanish investigators, the aim of the terrorists who were making TATP was to carry out a terrorist action of a “big magnitude.” When their bomb-making preparations in Alcanar went wrong, far from paralyzing other cell members or prompting them to surrender to the authorities, the destruction of the bomb factory galvanized them into alternative, improvised action. It is possible this happened because they anticipated it was only a matter of time before the police would identify them after grilling their hospitalized co-conspirator or after checking information on the car and motorbike parked directly in front of the collapsed Alcanar property. It is also highly likely that at least one of the cell members became aware of the Alcanar blast and its consequences when, over the morning and afternoon of August 17, Mossos, having unproductively questioned the injured man, also attempted via phone calls to find out about the users of the two vehicles. At least one phone call, made on or very shortly before 3:00 PM on August 17, reached cell member Younes Abouyaaqoub while he was driving a rented van on a beltway road about one hour away from Barcelona’s city center....

Cell Behind Barcelona Attack May Have Had Sights on Eiffel Tower
In the weeks before they carried out an
attack in the Spanish city of Barcelona last summer, a cell of jihadists
inspired by the Islamic State traveled repeatedly to France, where they
bought a camera and recorded footage of the Eiffel Tower.
That
video, as well as the stunning quantity of precursor chemicals used to
make explosives which were recovered from the safe house they used, has
led experts to conclude that the terrorists were plotting something much
larger and more catastrophic. The materials they left behind suggest
that their plan involved packing vans with explosives and attacking
targets not just in Spain, where the group killed 16 people and injured 140 others in August, but also possibly in France.
“The
existing evidence indicates the terrorist cell had planned a far more
ambitious and potentially more deadly operation,” Fernando Reinares and
Carola García-Calvo of the Program on Global Terrorism at the Elcano
Royal Institute in Madrid wrote in a study published on Wednesday....

The CNI could have prevented the 17-A attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils, according to Carlos E. Bayo, the public's reporter who revealed that the Spanish secret services followed the Ripoll group until the same week of the attack. In a statement to The World at RAC1, the journalist explained that in next articles he will show that the CNI knew what were the objectives of the group. "One thing is that they are secret services, but they are not 007 licensed to kill or to allow them to be massively killed," he said....

More Dirty War
This entry outlines the manipulations, insidious hints, and outright lies aimed at the Catalan government, and particularly the Catalan police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra (or simply "Mossos"), in a clear but desperate attempt to whip up public opinion against them in the run-up to the 1 October independence referendum that the Spanish government has not only refused to authorize (despite its commitment to international treaties on the issue) but threatens to confiscate the property of Catalan political leaders and their officials, bar them from office, dismiss them from their jobs, and even imprison on grounds of sedition and contempt of court.
Several precedents need to be borne in mind:
a. The refusal by Spain to allow Catalan police to belong to Europol and to be therefore able to directly share intelligence data. This was in June. The European police union Eurocop warned that their exclusion can compromise security throughout Europe. http://www.elpuntavui.cat/societat/article/5-societat/1173995-eurocop-alerta-que-l-exclusio-dels-mossos-d-europol-pot-comprometre-la-seguretat-de-tota-europa.html
b. Several ominous statements by former Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo. In hindsight it is easy to imagine he had forewarning of the August 17 attacks. I will not do this. The first was on September 10 2016, that is, a day before the Catalan National Day and the huge demonstrations in five cities across Catalonia. "A terrorist attack can be overcome, the dissolution of Spain is irreversible". He was still a minister.

The news is that a newspaper presents a falsified document, without stating this, to call into doubt the Catalan police. It says they received information about the La Rambla attack, suggesting that they ignored it. What is enormously relevant is that the media make the content of what has been published newsworthy. It is not something that easily happens with exclusive scoops from other media. My translation: "Last March, the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) forwarded at least two communications to the Mossos d 'Esquadra, which reported possible terrorist threats in Catalonia. This agency is an agency of the United States Government whose mission is to collect data on terrorism from more than twenty intelligence agencies in the country, in addition to maintaining relations with its international counterparts.
"On March 23 and 24, the US agency forwarded communications to the [Spanish] Police and Guardia Civil, informing them that, by given that its content affected Catalonia, it had also been forwarded to the Mossos. "Given that this memorandum includes possible information on threats in Barcelona, our service is providing the National Intelligence Centre (CNI), the Civil Guard (GC), the National Police of Spain (SNP), the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Spanish Counter-Terrorism and the Centro de Inteligencia del Crimen Organizado (Center for the Intelligence of Organized Crime, CITCO)", both reports said in their last paragraph."

All the Spanish press claims, following @elperiodico's lead, that the @mossos failed to heed a CIA May terrorist threat warning. Even @JulianAssange has laughed off a reproduced US warning (not from the CIA) as a manipulation. This warning was shared with the Spanish police (who later said they had no specific warning beforehand) and both agreed it had zero credibility. All this is irrelevant, for the terrorists, after losing their leader in the accidental explosion in #Alcanar, had improvised a B plan. But all the Madrid press has followed @elperiodico's lead in smearing the Catalan police, as if the attacks could have been prevented. The Catalan police have complained bitterly about Spain denying them access to #Europol, retaining information and blocking recruitment

Before considering what Prof. Ferran Requejo actually said (in an El Món interview), let me point out he holds no post of any kind in the Catalan government. Along with dozens of other academics and specialists, he was a member of an ad hoc "Advisory Council" which finished its work about three years ago.
"Requejo sees "two phases" in this matter. Before the attacks 'there was a political will on the part of the government of Madrid to exclude and marginalize the Catalan institutions'. The Mossos were excluded from the coordination of the security forces and Requejo recalls 'all the reluctance and obstacles that there were to hold a meeting of the Security Board, which has not met for eight years, until the president of the Generalitat, Carles Puigdemont, put his foot down'.
"The political scientist believes that the attitude of the State before the attack 'was totally negative' and 'it has already been seen, in a second phase [after the attacks] that it was not passing information.' The political scientist frames this way of acting in 'a clear political manoeuvre to have the Mossos' marginalized because, 'in the event that they acted, they would fail because of lack of information.'"

My translation: "...On two occasions, the Minister of the Interior, Juan Ignacio Zoido, has already gone out to made vague calls for "unity" and "absolute cooperation" in the fight against terrorism, only days after his own actions belied him: as soon as it was confirmed that the massacre of Las Ramblas was due to a terrorist attack, the Spanish government - with Mariano Rajoy and Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría at its head - travelled to Barcelona... though not to join the emergency cabinet created there by the Generalitat, but to form its own crisis cabinet and thus claim the political command of police operations against the murderous commando. So clear was this intention that neither that night nor the following morning was any representative of the Generalitat invited, not even the Mossos d'Esquadra who were chasing the Jihadists on the ground."
El Periódico eventually got hold of a document which they claimed was from the CIA or the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), who have failed to reply to two requests I have made to them to state whether they issued a statement on May 25, and who it was sent to.
It was not the May 25 message, but purported to be a copy of that message, issued at the request of person or persons unknown. It was hammered immediately by English-speakers.
See, for instance, http://www.elnacional.cat/es/sociedad/informe-cia-elperiodico_187014_102.html.
El Periódico, 31 August 2017
31 August 2017
This is the second, corrected version, immediately published in El Periódico, of a purported message from the CIA to CITCO, dated August 21, which refers to a message purportedly sent to the Catalan Mossos on May 25.
"21 August 2017"
It was also hammered immediately by a specialist in official US documents, Julian Assange and WikiLeaks, who even called for Sr. Hernàndez's resignation.

(My translation): "The interior minister, Joaquim Forn, claimed this Thursday that the warning about a possible attack on the Barcelona Rambla "from other sources", not from the CIA and that, after contrasting and assessing it, they concluded that it had "very low credibility".
"He also notes that the Catalan Ministry of the Interior communicated this warning to the State, which did not grant the threat credibility either, so it was not discussed at the meetings of the antiterrorist evaluation panels of May 25 and June 8, despite which the security measures on the Rambla were increased.
"The Minister, who has denounced a campaign of "intoxication and smearing" against the Mossos d'Esquadra, has highlighted that in the days after the attack on the Rambla, the State confirmed that none of the warnings received previously on the terrorist threat was related to the attacks that were finally perpetrated.
"In that alert of the intelligence services of the United States there was no data, such as affiliations, addresses or vehicle registration numbers, that could be used beyond mere prevention in the field of citizen security that, sources remember, is the exclusive competence of the Mossos in Catalonia."
http://www.cmmedia.es/noticias/espana/la-generalitat-dio-baja-credibilidad-al-aviso-del-atentado/
Spanish police forces have for years kept the Catalan police in the dark, not feeding them vital information.
A recent example:A US spy agency [Exeintel] says it had contacted with the Rambla assassin on 31 July". "Spies working for the Exeintel group, which works in Intelligence Security under contract for the US secret service, claimed to have released an international "Red Alert" after passing off as Jihadists and deceiving Younes Abouyaaqoub, who told them they were "five brothers", that they were "in Spain" led by "an imam" and were going to "attack a numbder of small towns"

In particular, he made friends there with Rachid Aglif, alias El conejo, (the Rabbit), who was serving an 18-year sentence there for having taken part in the Atocha station attacks (11 March 2014). http://www.elmundo.es/cataluna/2017/08/19/5997f791e5fdeaa3338b45a2.html

24 August: (my translation)
"The Belgian police contacted the Mossos to warn them about the imam of Ripoll in March 2016."
"That is, almost a year and a half before the attacks, that Belgian municipality [Vilboorde] already warned the Catalan autonomic police of the possible danger of this imam."
http://www.elmundo.es/espana/2017/08/24/599db4b3e2704e044d8b462b.html
The Belgian policeman had merely asked a Catalan colleague, in January 2016, if he could search the records for any information on Abdelbaki es Satty, who was applying for a job as imam in Vilboorde and was intending to go to Catalonia in February. Not a "warning" by Belgium, or the municipality, or the policeman himself: not a tip-off at all.

Trapero. Quatre mentides.
http://www.elnacional.cat/ca/opinio/iu-forn-algu-desmentira-trapero-mossos_186249_102.html
Journalist Iu Forn highlights four lies spread by the Spanish authorities and media to discredit the Catalan police:
a. They claimed the district judge called in to inspect the site of the first explosion (based in Amposta) had told the Mossos to investigate whether the explosion had been a terrorist bomb. According to Chief Inspector Trapero she merely asked if gas cylinders (of which dozens were found there) could be used to make bombs.
b. They claimed the Spanish police (including bomb specialists) were denied access to the site by the Catalans. Trapero said this was totally false: none approached them.
c. They claimed the Belgian police had warned the Catalan police, in 2016, that Abdelbaki es Satty was dangerous. The truth is merely that early in 2016 a Belgian policeman had emailed a Catalan policeman he had met at a conference, to ask him if the Catalan police had any information about es Satty.
d. They (in this case, El Periódico de Catalunya, under an hour after the Rambla attack) claimed the CIA had warned the Catalan police of an imminent terrorist attack on Barcelona in the Rambla, at the end of May 2017. Trapero hotly denied the Catalan police - who have been denied access to Europol by Spain - have had any dealings, far less direct ones, with the US Secret Service.
The Barcelona demonstration
There were absolutely no reports of any unrest or shouts at the Ripoll and Cambrils demonstrations. Noone "used" them to push the independence movement forward.
The (much, much larger) Barcelona demonstration was different. Both the King (no Spanish king is reported as EVER having gone to a demonstration before) and several planeloads of Spanish government ministers and officials announced they would attend the demonstration.
This led both to the CUP saying it would not attend the demonstration if the King and Spanish government were there; and to 170 Catalan organisations (only two working for independence, the rest reportedly advocating peace and justice) jointly making a public call against the more than obvious political use of the demonstration to call for "unity", and against the presence of friends and suppliers of advanced weaponry to the Heads of State of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states widely suspected of logistically supporting both ISIS (DAESH) and the spread of Salafism in mosques around Europe.
Among examples of Spanish media manipulation of the demonstration in Barcelona, to try and highlight the obnoxious interference of separatists here are several examples:
1. Alberto Estévez author of a photograph on the cover of La Razón, with a series of tweets starting with this one:

However, to my knowledge no Catalan or pro-independence flags were distributed at the demonstration, whereas Spanish flags were distributed and waved, even by Partido Popular MPs.
