In view of the exceptional events that have occurred during the last 2 years, and taking into account the legal situation of the legitimate government of Catalonia, Architects for Catalonia believe we must adopt an active position in the face of the democratic precariousness of the Spanish State.
It is time for the Catalan architects, committed to the country, to the territory, to culture and to democratic values long before rights and freedoms were recovered once the Franco dictatorship ended, to reiterate our support and our commitment to the self-determination of the Catalan people; this principle is defended by most citizens of Catalonia, as has been shown in all recent elections held in our country.
We also want to convey our support to all the prisoners and exiles who, with great sacrifice, chose to defend the democratic mandate emerging from the vote on October 1, 2017. We cannot accept any verdict other than the acquittal of all the charges for which who have been jailed and tried unfairly.
Despite the repression and incomprehensible attitude of Spanish State, we believe that we have made a great deal of progress in defending our rights as a people. The so-called "Catalan problem," is no longer considered by anyone, in the democratic world, to be a minor problem. The Catalan political situation is affecting the governability of Spain, as no any other conflict had done hitherto.
On October 1, 2017, we managed to hold a referendum on self-determination. The conditions under which this referendum was held were hampered by the repression of Spain's security forces. In spite of everything, the participation was peaceful, exemplary and so high that it more than legitimized it. The deep democratic tradition of the citizens of Catalonia entails a constant commitment to electoral processes; we are thus still willing to put the self-determination of Catalonia to the vote, in a referendum agreed with the Spanish State.
So, as we said in our 2017 manifesto,
"... we continue to affirm that the Right to Self-determination is an inalienable right linked to the dignity of peoples. It is one of the fundamental rights defined by the UN and accepted by developed countries.
This right is above any restrictive interpretation of national legislation, as shown by the multitude of countries that have gained their independence in this way, many of them during the 20th century.
For this reason, we shall continue to struggle for our irrevocable right to the holding of a REFERENDUM of self-determination, since we believe that it is the best way for a democratic country to resolve its conflicts in a peaceful way, responding to the challenges posed, through the majority will of its citizens.
We regard as completely anomalous, and contrary to the most basic principles of international law, the Spanish government's attitude of continuously opposing the holding of a referendum for the self-determination of Catalonia, practising an absolute lack of dialogue in relation to the question raised, disregarding the legitimate Government of Catalonia invested by the democratically elected political representatives, and that only knows how to give a judicial response to those who work to meet the demands of the greater part of our people. This is a reprehensible attitude, far removed from the practices of other democratic countries such as the United Kingdom or Canada, and that surprises and generates amazement in international circles..."
Although the attitude of Spain's institutions, that refuse the slightest dialogue regarding this claim, the citizens of Catalonia will continue to work and clamour peacefully for a political solution agreed with the Spanish State. We ask, and shall continue to do so for as long as need be, the Spanish State to abandon its current judicial strategy and seek the solution in the principles of international law, recognized by all deeply democratic countries.

Davant de les excepcionals circumstàncies produïdes durant els darrers 2 anys, i tenint en compte, la situació jurídica del legítim govern de Catalunya, Arquitectes per Catalunya pensem cal prendre una posició activa davant de la precarietat democràtica de l’Estat espanyol.És hora de que els arquitectes catalans, compromesos amb el país, amb el territori, amb la cultura i amb els valors democràtics des de molt abans de que es recuperessin els drets i les llibertats un cop acabada la dictadura franquista, tornem a manifestar el nostre recolzament i els nostre compromís amb lʼautodeterminació del poble català; principi defensat per la majoria dels ciutadans de Catalunya, com sʼha demostrat en totes les darreres eleccions celebrades al nostre país.
Així mateix, també volem manifestar el nostre suport a tots els presos i exiliats que, amb gran sacrifici, van optar per defensar el mandat democràtic emanat de les votacions de lʼ1 dʼoctubre de 2017. No podem acceptar cap més sentència que lʼabsolució de tots els càrrecs pels que han estat empresonats i jutjats injustament.
Malgrat la repressió i la incomprensible actitud de lʼEstat Espanyol, pensem que hem avançat molt en la defensa del nostres drets com a poble. Lʼanomenat “Problema català”, ja no és considerat per ningú, al món democràtic, un problema menor. La situació política catalana està afectant la governabilitat dʼEspanya, com no ho havia fet cap altre conflicte fins ara.
L’1 d’octubre de 2017, vam ser capaços de celebrar un referèndum d’autodeterminació. Les condicions en que es va celebrar aquest referèndum van ser alterades per la repressió de les forces de seguretat de l’estat espanyol. Malgrat tot, la participació va ser pacifica exemplar i tan elevada que el legitima àmpliament. La profunda tradició democràtica dels ciutadans de Catalunya, comporta un compromís constant amb els processos electorals; per tant, continuem disposats a sotmetre a votació l’autodeterminació de Catalunya, en un referèndum pactat amb l’Estat Espanyol.
Per tant, com dèiem al nostre manifest de lʼany 2017,
..."continuem afirmant que el Dret a lʼAutodeterminació és un dret inalienable lligat a la dignitat dels pobles. És un dels drets fonamentals definits per lʼONU i assumit pels països desenvolupats.
Aquest dret està per sobre de qualsevol interpretació restrictiva de les legislacions dʼàmbitnacional, com demostra la multitud de països que han obtingut la seva independència per aquesta via, bona part dels mateixos al llarg del passat segle XX.
Per això, continuarem lluitant pel nostre dret irrenunciable a la celebració dʼun REFERÈNDUM dʼautodeterminació, ja que pensem que és la millor via per que un país democràtic pugui resoldre els seus conflictes de forma pacifica, donant resposta als reptes plantejats des de la voluntat majoritària dels seus ciutadans.
Considerem totalment anòmala, i contraria als més elementals principis del dret internacional, aquesta actitud del govern espanyol oposat de forma continuada a la realització dʼun referèndum per lʼautodeterminació de Catalunya, practicant una absoluta manca de diàleg en relació a la qüestió plantejada, menystenint el legítim Govern de Catalunya investit pels representants polítics, escollits democràticament, i que tan sols sap donar resposta judicial als que malden per atendre les reivindicacions de bona part del nostre poble. Una actitud reprovable, ben allunyada de les pràctiques dʼaltres països democràtics com el Regne Unit o Canada, i que sorprèn i genera estupefacció en els àmbits internacionals”...
Malgrat que lʼactitud de les institucions espanyoles, negades al més mínim diàleg pel que fa a aquesta reivindicació, els ciutadans de Catalunya seguirem treballant i reivindicant de forma pacifica una solució política pactada amb lʼestat espanyol. Continuem demanant i ho farem durant tot el temps que calgui, que lʼEstat espanyol abandoni la seva actual estratègia judicial per buscar la solució en els principis del dret internacional, reconeguts per tots els països democràtics de soca-rel.
