Statement by the Council for the [Catalan] Republic after Suprem Court verdict (21 OCT 2019)

On October 21 2019, a week after the Supreme Court verdict, the Council for the Republic issued the following statement. It has been translated into English (by M.S.):

Since last Monday, the Catalans have given the world a lesson in dignity and democracy. The Council for the Catalan Republic supports and appreciates the mobilizations that are spreading throughout Catalonia.

We encourage all Democrats to continue mobilized and to persist, through non-violent action, to achieve...

The three demands of the Catalan democratic revolt

1. Peace. We demand the withdrawal from Catalonia of Spain's security forces. That the violence of the police against the citizens of Catalonia cease. We also denounce violence against professional journalists, which seeks to hamper the right to freedom of information. We demand that police violence be thoroughly investigated and responsibilities be determined. We demand that the Mossos d'Esquadra Catalan police) act according to the parameters that correspond to a democratic police force, as they did on 1 October, with a scrupulous respect for the rights of citizens, in accordance with the recommendations made public by the Sindic de Greuges (Catalan Ombudsman).

2. Freedom. Enough prison and exile and arbitrary arrests. We demand an amnesty for all political prisoners tried by the Spanish Supreme Court and the immediate release of all other political prisoners, the end of all cases against the independence movment and the free return of all exiles.

3. Self-determination. We demand that a referendum on self-determination be organized, organized by the Government of Catalonia with the agreement of the Spanish government and supervised by international authorities, in order to validate the referendum on self-determination of 1 October (2017). There are States, European and otherwsie, and international institutions and organizations that can act as guarantors of the results which, if favourable, should lead to the immediate proclamation of the Republic.

We have responded to the ignominious sentence of the Supreme Court on our feet, not our knees. We shall continue to stand up, young and old, until our victory!

Des del passat dilluns els catalans hem donat una lliçó de dignitat i democràcia al món. El Consell per la República Catalana dona suport i agraeix les mobilitzacions que s’escampen arreu de Catalunya.

Encoratgem tots els demòcrates a seguir mobilitzats i persistir, des de l’acció no-violenta, fins a aconseguir:

Les tres demandes de la revolta democràtica catalana

1. Pau. Exigim la retirada de Catalunya dels cossos i forces de seguretat de l’estat espanyol. Que s’aturi la violència de la policia contra la ciutadania de Catalunya. Denunciem també la violència contra els professionals dels mitjans de comunicació, que pretén alterar el dret a la llibertat d’informació. Exigim que s’investigui a fons la violència policial i es depurin responsabilitats. Reclamem que els mossos d’Esquadra actuïn d’acord amb els paràmetres que corresponen a una policia democràtica, tal i com van fer l’1-O, amb un respecte escrupolós pels drets dels ciutadans, d’acord amb les recomanacions fetes públiques pel Síndic de Greuges.

2. Llibertat. Prou presó i exili. Prou detencions arbitràries. Exigim l’amnistia de tots els presoners polítics jutjats al Tribunal Suprem espanyol i l’alliberament immediat de tots els altres presoners polítics, la fi de totes les causes contra l’independentisme i el lliure retorn de tots els exiliats.

3. Autodeterminació. Exigim que es faci un referèndum d’autodeterminació, organitzat pel govern de Catalunya amb l’acord del govern espanyol i supervisat per autoritats internacionals, per tal de convalidar el referèndum d’autodeterminació de l’1-O. Hi ha estats, europeus o no, i institucions i organitzacions internacionals que poden fer de valedors del resultat, que si és favorable ha de portar a la proclamació immediata de la República.
