Five of Catalonia’s political prisoners were elected to the Spanish Congress and Senate on 28 April. When Junqueras, Sànchez, Rull, Turull, and Romeva were sworn in on Tuesday in hostile atmospheres in Spain’s upper and lower chambers, the spectre of suspension from office already hovered in the air. The mainstream Spanish press and right-wing political parties expect a decision today and are sharpening their knives. They demand that the political prisoners be suspended and are demanding Meritxell Batet’s resignation and threatening charges of perverting the course of justice only days into her term as Speaker of the Congress if she ignores Marchena & Co’s clear but legally questionable instructions; for daring to seek clarification. Why is it such a hot potato?
