Wake Up! From a pamphlet published by the Catalan government (11 NOV 1713)

On 11 November 1713. the Generalitat de Catalunya published a pamphlet, Despertador de Catalunya, to rally forces in support of the Habsburg King (former Archduke) Charles in his war against King Philip V (IV of Aragon).

Click , if need be, to read the transcript and translation (extracts).

This was issued just ten months before the besieged city of Barcelona fell to the Bourbon army, at the end of the War of Spanish Succession.

"Wake up, wake up, slumbering Catalans, to the living voices of this zealous, true Awakener.

For you have he who lights you up with clear light, do not bury your honour, your laws and the freedom of your beloved Homeland in the black darkness of perpetual, deplorable slavery.

 Open your eyes ...."

"Desperteu-vos, desperteu-vos, Catalans adormits, a les vives veus d'aquest gelós verdader Despertador.

Puix teniu qui amb clara llum vos il·lumina, no sepulteu la vostra honra, vostres lleis i la llibertat de la vostra Pàtria estimada en la negra obscuritat d'una perpètua deplorable esclavitud.

Obriu els ulls...."

p88-89

"Wake up, wake up you slumbering Catalans, to the living voices of this zealous true Awakener: for you have he who gives you clear light, do not bury your Honour, your Laws and the Freedom of your beloved Homeland in the black darkness of a perpetual deplorable slavery. Open your eyes to the light of this Awakener, before you are utterly blinded in the dark darkness of he who wishes to see you weep for your shameful and hard slavery; do not miss the opportune chance that time offers you to perpetuate your immortal Fame, your invaluable Freedom, your eternal Glory, your valuable Laws and the public peacefulness of your beloved Homeland. Look how its true children exclaim with compassionate tears, and say: our Compatriots are our greatest Enemies. Look, true Catalans, that in your glorious nation it was said, that giving assistance contributes to its greater harm. Look at those to whom you give assistance, you give strength to those who only want them for your affronting punishment, and so, apply them as your should to your opportune remedy, to that of your Fatherland, and to leave your sons in gentle freedom, since you will manage to make yourselves free, and honoured your parents, preserving the Laws, which  the glorious, ancient Predecessors knew how to deserve with their blood, which you must not deny all your descendants forever.

That is why your Laws oblige you, by which you will shake off the yolk of France - whose Princes are excluded by your Rights - and oblige you to remain free under the gentle obedience of your Catholic, and Augustissim Monarch, as you have sworn: You chose in Parliament (Corts Generals) said the Most Serene Lord Duke; without Cortes you cannot, and should not change your Lord; the prodigies that God executes for you in favour of Catalonia reinforce your confidence; the glorious examples of your ancients must be inviolable precepts, which you are duty-bound to imitate;  to their example you must accredit your constant loyalty, for it would be an affront not to remain with firm constancy, who pushed himself with just reason. And since in this Awakener you have copies, which incite you; prodigis, and God's favours that spur you on; and Laws, which intimate your defense, and deprive your surrender, do not despise such illustrious specimens; so many patents lavished; and so clear, and precious Laws, losing the noble blazon, that publishes the Fame of your Nation: for by all the World they preach their Clarins, that you were the most firm defenders of the Mother country; do not abandon your credit, being disunited on the only occasion that you can immortalize your honour, serving as a new admiration for the World, and giving God, the King, your children, and descendants, and all of Spain, the greatest gift, and above all a srtill greater one to the Holy Roman Catholic Church."
