I would like to make a clarification. The official position of German foreign policy and the SWP is not to support independentist movements following the "Croatia doctrine." Basically and in the case of Catalonia for fear of provoking another Balkan war in southern Europe. This is the majority position within SWP. But there are exceptions like the analyst Kai Olaf Lang who has participated in events organized by delegations of the Generalitat of Catalonia and has a good friendship with some ERC MEPs. However, the machinery of Spanish diplomacy has been pressing hard in Berlin for about a month, recovering the line of work laid down by [former minister] Margallo in his period in the Foreign Ministry and that until now Dastis had failed to follow. They have organized some public and private events and meetings to counter the public opinion favourable to Catalonia (by the way, not held by all or even most) and also to prepare the ground for possible charges against our President (MHP) Puigdemont for misuse of public funds. Also at high level. Among these events, Dr. Sabine Riedel is a fundamental figure, and she gave access to an event by Societat Civil Catalana [1], with Rosiñol i Tey, inside SWP. I can say it without breaking any confidentiality principle because SCC made it public. This event was preceded by another at the Hertie Schml organized by a person opposed to processes of independence such as Alina Mungiu-Pippidi on March 22 in which all the opinions of were contrary to the independence of Catalonia, with papers by Elcano analysts and Algeria Queralt who, together with Spanish diplomacy, make it possible to link Dr. Riedel with SCC, for the event at the headquarters of the think tank and, in addition, to generate opinion favourable to Unionism and against the independence of Catalonia. Spanish diplomacy is pressing strongly and has the necessary instruments to carry out such actions. If you want to "buy" 40 MPs or 30 academics from any state it can do so. And we do not currently have these instruments[2] and are lucky enough that some people supplement this by doing individual diplomacy without any support backing them. From now on: may no-one think that a State or a think tank will recognize Catalonia if we are the first not to recognize ourselves. If you let yourtself get trodden on, these things happen. [2] The Spanish government closed down Diplomat, the public-private consortium of public diplomacy. That closure has been challenged by the Parliament of Catalonia before the Constitutional court.
