Reproduction of Spanish nationalist Francisco Caja's letter (4 FEB 2022)

This 2011 letter shows the extremely nationalistic views of the leader of an organisation purportedly devoted to defending the values of the 1978 Constitution, but who dream of a return of the status of Catalan language BEFORE that Constitution, linking up to Franco's policies.

Francisco Caja, of Convivencia Cívica Catalana (sic)(1) sent a letter, years ago, to Albert Rivera (2), privately, to calm him down, because ithe leader of Ciutadans could apparently not sleep because of the unexpected power of the Catalan independence movement and for the recovery of the Catalan language and culture that independence implied. Specifically, the letter is dated May 29, 2011.

Albert,

As I see that you have your mobile phone disconnected, I want to send you this reflection so that you calm down. Of course it depends on our ability to convince more parents. We're doing all we can, Albert. It costs a lot to get parents to move. So many years of immersion have created an inertia and parents see it as very violent to “mark” their children in this way. For the 2013-2014 year I think we can count on several thousand parents joining. FAES (3) and DENAES (4) have promised us help. I'll let you know. By the way, I know you don't agree, but why don't you seek broader agreements with Alicia [Sánchez Camacho, head of PP in Catalonia]? But I think that, strategically, the moment to knock Catalan out and return it to the farmhouses will come with the evolution of the political situation. For these people are serious. —It is evident that Mas and ERC are going to reach an agreement for their secessionist adventure—. And I think the time will come immediately after the autonomy is supended. So we won't have to wait that long. I believe that a drift towards independence can easily be derailed by the State, with or without military intervention. They are'n't going to leave us defenders of Spain on our own. Between all of us, we will return Catalan to its situation prior to 1978. That is, starve it and strip it of the "prestige" it has obtained at the expense of Castilian. Even if secession goes ahead, I think the language issue would be a formidable tool to strike down the resulting new "state."

 

We would have a well prepared field for the revolt as soon as the separatists made a move to impose their language. Even some Catalanist leaders who pay attention to the language spoken by young people (even having passed through their school) confess to you that without their own State, Catalan has little time left). And they will take that step no matter how much those from Esquerra seem to tip-toe over the subject today. Pure strategy. Then it will be a considerable weapon to destabilize the new Catalan papier-mâché scenario. They will go overboard trying to correct the weakness of their language due to the lack of birth rates they have. The Catalan woman, she is so sensual, but how she closes like a clam when it comes to giving birth…. It will be then that we will make her pay and the prophecy of Don Leopoldo [Calvo-Sotelo] about the contribution of immigration will be fulfilled. Then the mainly Spanish-speaking population will explode. And, if not, at the time. This will not be like Estonia and Lithuania, where the Russians were stopped in their tracks. And it won't be like that because the population's comfort with our language, and their discomfort with Catalan, will make people rebel... Sooner or later, Castilian will take pride of place in Catalonia again. And not only in the courts and in the economy. And I have no doubt that your role in such a noble mission will be decisive. You have the CCC people with you. In turn, it is evident that C's has to be the maximum beneficiary of the language war. A war that we will win against those who want to impose on us a language from the past that, unfortunately, Franco did not finish putting in its place. 

 

I send you these reflections just so that you can feel calmer. And we'll see each other on Friday, right?

Francisco Caja, de Convivencia Cívica, va trametre una carta, fa anys, a Albert Rivera, privadament, perquè es tranquil·litzés, perquè es veu que l’aleshores líder de Ciutadans no podia dormir per la inesperada potència de l’independentisme català i per la recuperació de la llengua i cultura catalanes que exigeix l’independentisme. Concretament la carta és del 29 de maig del 2011.

“Albert,

Como veo que tienes el mv desconectado, te quiero enviar esta reflexión para que estés más tranquilo. Claro que depende de nuestra capacidad de convencer a más padres. Hacemos lo que podemos, Albert. Cuesta mucho que los padres se muevan. Tantos años de inmersión han creado una inercia y los padres ven muy violento “marcar” a sus hijos así. Para el año 2013-2014 creo que podemos contar con varios miles de padres en esto. La FAES y DENAES nos han prometido ayuda. Ya te cuento. Por cierto, ya sé que no estás de acuerdo, porqué tu no buscas más amplios acuerdos con Alicia [Sánchez Camacho]. Pero creo que, estratégicamente, el momento de noquear al catalán y devolverlo a las masías vendrá con la evolución del momento político. Porque estos van en serio.  — Es evidente que Mas y ERC van a llegar a un acuerdo para su aventura secesionista—. Y creo que el momento llegará inmediatamente después de la suspensión de la autonomía. O sea que tampoco tendremos que esperar tanto.  Creo que una deriva independentista se podrá descarrilar fácilmente desde el Estado, con o sin intervención militar. No nos van a dejar tirados a los defensores de España. Entre todos, devolveremos al catalán a su situación anterior a 1978. Es decir, matarlo de hambre y despojarlo del “prestigio” que ha obtenido a costa del castellano. Incluso si la secesión fuera adelante, pienso que el tema de la lengua sería una herramienta formidable para fulminar el nuevo “estado” resultante.

Tendríamos un campo abonado para la revuelta en cuanto los separatistas movieran ficha para imponer su idioma. Incluso algunos dirigentes catalanistas que se fijan en el idioma que hablan los jóvenes (incluso habiendo pasado por su escuela) te confiesan que sin Estado propio, le queda poco tiempo al catalán). Y ese paso lo darán por mucho que hoy los de Esquerra parezcan pasar hoy del tema. Pura estrategia. Entonces será un arma considerable para desestabilizar el nuevo estadillo catalán de cartón piedra. Se les irá la mano al querer corregir la debilidad de su idioma por la falta de natalidad que tienen. La mujer catalana, tan sensual ella, pero que tan estrecha les ha salido a la hora de parir….  Será entonces que se lo haremos pagar y se cumplirá la profecía de Don Leopoldo [Calvo-Sotelo] sobre la aportación de la inmigración. Entonces la población mayoritariamente castellanoparlante, estallará. Y si no, al tiempo. Esto no será como Estonia y Lituania, donde a los rusos se les paró los pies. Y no será así porqué la comodidad que tiene la población con nuestro idioma, y su incomodidad con el catalán, hará que la gente se rebele... Más tarde o más temprano, el castellano volverá a señorear en Cataluña. Y no sólo en los tribunales y en la economía.  Y no tengo duda de que tu papel en tan noble encomienda será decisivo. Tienes a la gente de CCC contigo.  A su vez, es evidente que C’s debe ser el máximo beneficiario de la guerra de la lengua. Una guerra que ganaremos contra los que nos quieren imponer un idioma del pasado que por desgrac1a Franco no acabó de poner en su sitio.
