Dirigents espanyols han fet servir "referéndum ilegal" com a mantra demofòbica per a diferents consultes a Catalunya: les consultes populars de 2009-2011; la consulta del 9-N (2014) i el referèndum d'autodeterminació de l'1-O (2017). On the 6th September 2017, the Catalan regional government called an independence referendum.
Despite being banned by the Spanish government, the 1st of October with rain lashing down and in an extremely hostile atmosphere, thousands of people went out to vote. "1-0"is the story of the day of what happened in 5 of the polling stations in what both a terrible yet unforgettable day which saw more than two million people fight pacifically for their right to decide their own future."

Per exemple, una ordre de la consellera Bassa de 29 de setembre, referida a una petició de la CGT (Confederació General del Treball) feta el 21 de setembre, és a dir, abans de la vaga citada pel Ministeri Fiscal i l'Advocacia de l'Estat!
