There are those that are still uncomfortable about calling the Catalan politicians and social leaders (in pre-trial for a year or more) political prisoners. This quote from a ruling by judge Llarena turning down an appeal for bail on February 2 2018 (after the pro-independence parties had repeated their parliamentary majority, despite every effort by Spain to prevent this outcome) should clarify the issue!

"From this point of view, the evaluation of risk carried out by this investigator diverges from that held by the defendant in his request for freedom.The defendant, in expression of his legitimate ideological freedom, logically maintains his pro-sovereignty ideology which, even though constitutionally valid, does not mean that one should give up assessing that the conviction that he maintains makes possible a reiteration of the offence that would be absurd in whoever professes the contrary deology. His ideology coexists moreover with a political context in which there is no certainty that the intention of achieving the independence of Catalonia has disappeared; there are still sectors that explicitly defend that it must be attained immediately and persevere in the mechanism of secession contrary to the penal norms which is being prosecuted here. It is precisely this last attitude that is sustained by the person who had entrusted Sr. Forn to be Interior minister, and headed the electoral list which the defendant decided to join a few weeks ago."
