Thread by Nordic.cat on why Catalonia is not understood in northern Europe (16 DEC 2020)

A Norwegian-Catalan tweeter has written a thread of tweets explaining why the Catalan mentality is not understood in northern Europe. Here is my English translation (I hope the author does not mind).

The main obstacle for Catalonia to achieve freedom is a sociological-cultural issue. It is its mentality based on the principles of "Roman+Catholic+Apostolic" morality (as I call it), deliberately instilled by the Fascist indoctrination of the colonizing regime.

In this mental frame, we are still waiting for a "superior authority" (almost a divine one) to come and give us the legitimacy that the authoritarian regime denies us. That is why we look to the EU, in search of this “paternal-maternal authorization” to morally legitimize us to be and feel like a nation.

But this "moral" recognition that we are waiting for does not come, nor will it come. For in a democratic Europe with a Protestant and Calvinist tradition, the world is conceived of and practised in a completely different way. One's own freedom and self-awareness are taken for granted.

In the mature democracies of central and northern Europe, no one asks permission to exist, neither individually nor as a nation. This sick, Latin, Mediterranean need to constantly assert ourselves is interpreted as a weakness and a lack of conviction in Europe.

So what we have here is a problem of incompatibility of mentalities and expectations.

The EU is an economic club governed by a series of rules that make up its rule of law. It would not occur to any central of northern European to think that Catalonia expects them to "defend" us from Spain.

The EU will do what it has (and already does) to enforce its laws and issue verdicts in accordance with the rule of European law. But do not expect Europe to come and “caress” us and empower us morally to face up to our own threats and problems as a nation.

Europe takes from granted that we are mature from a personal and national point of view. This childish need for approval to "dare" to be who we are is the result of centuries of totalitarian domination (I know, as a Catalan). But as a Norwegian, I tell you that this is not understood in Europe.

As I’ve told you before: the EU (and the rest of the democratic universe) will start treating us as an equal nation, when we start behaving like a nation in Europe.

That is why I keep telling you that Catalonia has to through a process of political and democratic maturation.

We have to stand firm and united to the last consequences, at all costs, always convinced of the legitimacy of our cause. If we do that, we will have European support in a matter of weeks, I am convinced. For the EU, the 1978 régime is very uncomfortable right now.

...ooo000ooo...
