MANIFESTO by French Senators (24/3/2019)

41 senators, belonging to different political groups of the French Assembly have signed an appeal for the respect of fundamental rights in Catalonia. Here is an English translation of the text (by MS).

For the respect of fundamental rights and freedoms in Catalonia

41 senators, belonging to different political groups of the High Assembly, sign an appeal for the respect of fundamental rights in Catalonia. They demand political solutions at the European level, denouncing "the repression suffered by legitimately elected officials, political representatives of the Generalitat of Catalonia imprisoned or forced into exile for their opinions in the exercise of the mandates entrusted to them by the voters" .

For the respect of fundamental rights and freedoms in Catalonia 

"Our country is close to Spain and its great Region, Catalonia, with whom we share a long history.

As Europeans and as Frenchmen, we feel concerned by the serious events that took place in Catalonia. At the time of the trial before the Spanish Supreme Court of former members of the Catalan Regional Government, the former Speaker of the Catalan Parliament and Catalan association leaders,
We, members of the Senate of the Republic:

•     call for respect for fundamental rights and freedoms in Catalonia, without, of course, interfering in the political problems of a neighbouring country and without taking sides on the subject of the independence of Catalonia;

•     denounce the repression suffered by legitimately elected officials, political representatives of the Generalitat of Catalonia imprisoned or forced into exile for their opinions in the exercise of the mandates entrusted to them by the electors;

•     note that this situation is a veritable attack on democratic rights and freedoms;

•     regret that the seriousness of this situation is underestimated in our country;

•     ask France and the countries of the European Union to intervene to restore the conditions of dialogue in order to find political solutions to a political problem".
