CATALAN ASSOCIATION FOR CIVIL RIGHTS

Communiqué on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Shared struggles have represented historical conquests for fundamental rights. We have to be able to know how to defend them against the violations they are suffering, now that some of these rights are in danger.

Today in Spain there are exiles, convicts, political prisoners; four of the political prisoners are on hunger strike to denounce the violation of their rights. The existence of political prisoners on hunger strike is proof that Spain is a failed democracy.

· The right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, opinion and expression
· The right of peaceful assembly and association
· The right to freedom
· The right to equality before the law
· The right to the absence of arbitrary arrest, detention and exile
· The right to a fair trial
· The right of political participation
· The right to life
· The right to personal safety

The defence of these rights should be inherent to the human condition. Their guarantee makes us free and makes us persons.
