Dear Miss Forcadell,

Nearly a year ago, on the 26th and 27th September 2017, I was pleased to have two interesting meetings with you in Brussels at the occasion of the handover of the Coppieters Award, and most of all, in my own office In the Flemish Parliament.

Since then, things have turned to the worse for the democracy in Catalonia.

The violence used during the elections was only the most outrageous expression of an undemocratic policy.

Keeping politicians under arrest for months is an even more insidious act, a proof that the central government in Spain is not able to meet the conditions to be part of a modern democratic European Union.

Therefore, Miss Forcadell, I'd like to express my ongoing support for your ambitions to give the Catalan people the opportunity to choose for their own identity.

As the speaker of the Flemish Parliament, I hope that you - and the other Catalan politicians in detention - will be given back their freedom, because it's absolutely unacceptable for politicians to be arrested for their opinions.

I wish you, your family and friends, a lot of courage and strength in this [sic] extremely difficult circumstances.

Kind regards,

Jan Peumans

Speaker of the Flemish Parliament
